The Great Desert of Tatev is one of the valuable complexes of the late Middle Ages. It had a military significance in the 18th century, during the liberation struggle organized by Davit Bek.
The religious and educational center of the 17th century was located in Vorotan valley, near Tatev village (Syunik region). The reason for its creation was the destruction of the Harants Desert in the same valley, to the south, after which the congregation moved to a new place in 1660 and built the Great Desert.
